Paw Pals
2002 Archive
Your mail arrives. And as you sort through the bills, advertisements,
etc..., a smile comes to your face when you come across a letter from an old friend. Same
here at Little Shelter, when we receive a note from one of our former residents who have
been adopted into a loving home.
Like old friends, it's nice to know that you can share a part of your
lives and still remain "paw pals".
These notes not only belong to the workers and volunteers at Little
Shelter, but to YOU, our supporters and sponsors. Therefore, this page entitled "paw
pals", is to share with you notes from some "old friends" that you have
helped along the way.

Dear Friends At Little Shelter:
Five years ago, I was born at your shelter in December, where I received a lot
of love and training. A year later I was adopted. You will remember me as GEM 597G. My
name is Jennie, now, and I thought you'd like to hear how I'm doing.
I've grown up to be a very beautiful lady, who even had her picture printed in
Pet Life Magazine. Not bad for a shelter dog! My mom is my best friend in the whole world,
and I follow her everywhere. I get sad when she goes away and I go bonkers when she comes
home. I love to travel in the car and now go to PA to visit our summer home. There are so
many new scents and I love to watch the deer. Of course, I'd love to run with them, but
I'm not allowed! Besides, I like to take long walks up and down the hills. (Mom needs an
O2 tank at the end of the walk) This exercise keeps my body nice and trim and my
hindquarters in great shape.
In my spare time, I play den mother to the cats that live with me. My friend is
Old Man who is 16 years old. He was an abused cat with one eye. He is now going blind in
the good eye and I act as his Seeing Eye friend when he gets a little confused. What's a
big sister for? I love it when there are kittens in the house, because I get to groom and
pseudo nurse them. I cuddle with them and when they get into trouble, I get mom to help
them. Also, I have a friend named Cannoli who is a rabbit. She lives downstairs in the den
and I can watch her for hours. Of course, she's in her rabbit condo. We share carrots and
nose rubs once in a while.
So you see, I'm doing all the right things. I get into trouble once in a while
if I chew on something that's not mine. I can't help it if I like cat toys. Those little
mice are so cute. The recycled pink tails in the dog run outside give me away every time.
Yep, I get the lecture and am told to play with my own toys.
So as you can tell, I'm enjoying my life. Give my best to all the fur babies at
Little Shelter and with all my heart, I hope that Santa finds them all loving homes.

Dear Little Shelter
Hi its me, T.C. thats short for Tabby Cat!
Im writing from Connecticut to let all of you know Im just great! If
you remember, I was adopted a year ago and it was a wonderful day indeed. I didnt
think anyone would love me because, you see, Im not quite perfect. One eye is a
little cloudy and I cant really see out of it so well, but I have a mischievous
& playful purrsonality that just charmed my new family into keeping me!
(they would have kept me anyway). And guess what? One of my brothers, William, is also
from Little Shelter AND he has only one eye that works too!
We are quite the cat crew me, William & Percy 24 hrs of
hallway racing, wrestling & hide and seek, Bird TV, naps, mouse hunt (real and fake
mice) and helping Mom & Dad with important things! I especially like shoulder
rides with Dad.
We love our Golden Retriever, Fiona and she loves us. Its a
great life!
Thanks for all the care you gave me while I was there with you. I hope more
people will give the one-eyed cats in this world a chance. And all the other animals that
may not be so beautiful outside, but are truly beautiful inside (see photos of my cute
self!). We all need a forever home to love us just the way we are.
Much love,
T.C.

Gizmo and Buddy

As promised, here are a couple of pictures of the boys in their new
home. Their names are Gizmo and Buddy (Buddy is after my late cat's father) and Gizmo,
well he just looks like a Gizmo.
Needless to say, they have taken over our home, as well as our
hearts, and we're so grateful to have them in our lives. They are certainly happy and
extremely loving kittens, and whatever you guys did after rescuing them, keep up the gook
work. |
Jesse & Bubba

We thought you would like an update on our wonderful dog.
My daughter, Maureen, adopted Bubba in Spring 2001(male). My son Lawrence and I adopted Jesse in June
2002(female).
We love them both and when they visit each other....they are
truly "kissing cousins". |

Dear Friends
Just a quick update on the two beautiful kittens we recently adopted from you.
We have named them Louie (Gray) & Leo (Black). They have brought much love into our
home & we are grateful to you for bringing us all together.

Walter
Thanks for taking such great care of me while I was with you. And
for finding me a home where everyone loves me so much.
I'm sticking to my diet & getting lots of exercise. I even went to the vet
& had my teeth cleaned. I'll send another picture soon.
Hugs & kisses,
Walter
P.S. we sent a little something that we hope will be at least a little help. |

It's been almost 2 years since you found us a home and we're so
happy. We just moved to Rhode Island into a great house with lots of windows. So we spend
much of our day bird watching.
We hope everyone at the Little Shelter has a great holiday.

To All My Friends at Little Shelter,
My family read in Newsday that Little Shelter is going through some hard times.
Last year, when I was going through a rough time, Little Shelter was there for
me. I will never forget how you took me in and loved me and took care of me. Even though I
was confused and frightened, your love and concern made my days a bit easier.
Fortunately, my soon to be family came to Little Shelter after I was there only
about a week. I knew the minute I saw them that they were for me! Every time they passed
my kennel, I ran out and wagged my tail. All the other dogs were barking, so I tried to
get their attention by being a little different: I didn't bark at all. I just wagged my
tail and tried to look happy.
Finally, after passing me by several times, they stopped to look at me. The girl
who was bringing them around told them I was a really nice dog. I'm ever so grateful that
she put a good word in for me!
Before I knew it, I was on a leash and out to meet my new people. They looked
like "belly rub types" so a flipped over and let them rub my belly. They brought
me into the yard. My name was "Buddha" then, and when the mom called my name, I
ran over to her, sat at her feet and looked up into her eyes. I'll never forget the moment
when she said, "We'll take him!".
Now I live on an acre in Dix Hills. I've literally gone from rags to riches!
There is even a cute poodle next door whom I visit at the fence every day. I go for walks,
and my family brings me with them almost everywhere...last year we even visited Santa!
They tell me I'm the best dog they've ever had.
If you hadn't been there for me, I never would have found my true home. I know
you checked out my prospective family very carefully, and even provided free advice from a
trainer when I was having a few problems adjusting to my new digs. I can never thank you
enough for all you did for me.
I asked my family if they would help you out during your "rough time".
I hope it helps. And I hope you always are there for animals in need. I will never forget
you!
Love,
Barker [formerly Buddha) |

News from Perry |

To all my friends (feline and human):
Just
a short note to let you know what it has been like for the two months since I left the
Little Shelter.
Firstly, let me say that my humans are very nice. The female one (I call her
Mommy now) is home with me all the time. She is always buying me something new. She gets
me furry mice (not real of course), balls that make noise, soft fluffy blankets to sleep
on and is always talking to me. I still haven't let her pet me (its driving her crazy),
but I'll continue this for a while longer. She'll really be happy when I let her. But,
I'll do it in my own sweet time. The male human (he's the Daddy) goes out every day and
lets me stay with Mommy. I like her, and if I don't see her when I get up from a nap I go
looking for her. Sometimes she is in her office, sometimes she is in a glass box that has
water in it (yuck, she gets wet and comes out and talks to me!!) called a shower. Mommy
and I play hide and go seek, she runs with a string and I try and attack it. I do have a
lot of fun. I don't think I'm coming back, I like it here.
I have enclosed a picture of myself (that Mommy is always taking pictures of
me). I feel very lucky to have found a human family that I can call my own. I hope all of
my friends find someone that will take them home someday.
Your friend,
Perry |
