Dog Day

Afternoons

dda6.jpg (26011 bytes)

Little Shelter and its residents are assisting with the needs of the community through our "Pet Therapy" program. The program, coordinated by Joey Miceli, a volunteer at the Shelter allows us to reach out to the Seniors of our community.

Periodic visits are made to Seniors residing in Nursing Facilities by dogs awaiting "Forever Homes" at the Shelter. Our canine residents, chaperoned by Little Shelter Volunteers, take an afternoon to drop by and say "Hi".

"Pet Therapy" is a rewarding experience for the dogs, who exchange kisses for the Tender Loving Care that the Seniors provide, as well as the volunteers who get the opportunity to spend time with the Seniors of our Community.

GOLDMAN SACHS COMES TO LITTLE SHELTER

Friday, June 7 saw some very special volunteers come to Little Shelter. New York City firm Goldman Sachs chose Little Shelter as a charity that they would like to spend a day volunteering their services at.

Never have we seen a harder bunch of workers. The day started out cloudy and raining, but the 18 strong team, headed by Nancy Kelly, were not phased by the inclement weather. They were out there in their rain coats toiling away, spreading woodchips, pulling weeds, planting flowers & weedwacking. Their enthusiasm never waned, stopping only to have a bite to eat for lunch. Thankfully the rain did not last all day and our workers were able to see some sunshine.

After a day of hard work from the Goldman Sachs employees Little Shelter looked great. We would like to thank the team for their wonderful efforts and hope that they will return next year.

THANK YOU GUYS!

LITTLE SHELTER GOES BANKING

If you visited JP Morgan Chase Bank on Larkfield Road, East Northport on June 12, you would have found some four legged friends waiting to greet you. The staff from Chase Bank invited us to hold a booth in their branch for the day. Little Shelter pooches Rikki, Frenchie, Lucky and Moses thought that they would supervise the operations at the bank for the day. They were escorted by volunteers Cathy, Phil and Ron.

Thanks to the staff at JP Morgan Chase Bank, E. Northport, for making this such an enjoyable day.  Our furry friends hope to visit again.

THEY'RE OFF
walkathon_2002_2.jpg

9:00am, Sunday April 14th, marked the start of the walkathon hosted by Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington Station. The fundraising event was sponsored by BJ'S WHOLESALE OF WESTBURY, GLORIA JEANS COFFEE OF WALT WHITMAN MALL, THE NY RANGERS, TEMPLE O'ELOHIM, BRANCH FINANCIAL SERVICES OF SMITHTOWN, CYCLE PLUS OF HUNTINGTON, ADVENTURELAND AMUSEMENT PARK IN FARMINGDALE, AND WALK RADIO.

The idea for the event came about from some caring school children of our community, TRACY SWEETBAUM, KIM FEIGENBAUM, AND ALYSSA ROSE, who wanted to make a difference in the lives of cats and dogs residing at Little Shelter.

With the help of Tracy's mom, MINDY, the girls organized the event and signed up participants, making the day a success.

Thanks to all for a JOB WELL DONE!

SCHOOLS - AN AMAZING SOURCE OF SUPPORT FOR LITTLE SHELTER!

Schools have been an amazing source of financial support and help for Little Shelter.  The spirit, creativity and drive of children of all ages to help our animals has been an inspiration to us all.

The staff from Little Shelter love to visit the schools to show them how much we appreciate their hard work.  We talk to the children about our shelter and programs so that they know how the money they raised will benefit us.  We are usually accompanied by one of our four-legged furry friends.

One of our recent visits was to Branch Brook Elementary school in Smithtown.  The children had held a Bake Sale to raise money for Little Shelter.  We sent staff members Jodi and Arleen to talk to the children.   They were supervised by Charlie Brown, a special needs dog who was adopted from Little Shelter.

Thank you to Branch Brook Elementary and all the schools who have supported Little Shelter!

Shelter's Real Life Room Renovated

The "Real Life Room" is a quiet, homelike environment where the dogs can spend calm time. It is also used to show dogs to the public, so they can really see what the dog would be like in a home.

The room was in dire need of repair. Volunteers Ron Kurtz and Dan Daly donated a month of their time to rebuild the entire room. We couldn't have done it without them!!! Our sincerest thanks.

Earlier this year Girl Scout Troop 55 had undertaken a food drive for Little Shelter. On Friday, April 12, they got their chance to see what all of their wonderful efforts were for. The girls were taken on a tour of the shelter by staff members Jodi and Joe where they visited with our dogs and cats. Here are they are pictured with recently adopted poochie Sammy.

MAKING THE ROUNDS

While waiting for his "forever home", Little Shelter resident, Hunter, has been making his rounds to personally thank the students of our community for the fantastic jobs they have been doing to "save" Little Shelter.

On March 19th, Hunter, accompanied by Little Shelter president, Maryann Chernovsky, and Jodi Record, visited Commack Middle School to show and tell the students what Little Shelter is all about.

Hunter, the scholar, was off again, on March 26,  to the East Northport Middle School with Little Shelter representatives Arleen Leone and Jodi Record. The students had held a "Crunchie Munchie" sale fundraiser.  We suspect someone was in search of a doggie bag.

Monte Carlo night at Oheka Castle

One enchanted evening of splendor and fun was had by all who attended "Monte Carlo" night at Oheka Castle In Cold Spring Hills on February 27th. The night was filled with spectacular food, games of chance, and a silent auction with all proceeds going directly to Little Shelter.

We thank all those that sponsored this regal event and especially a friend to Little Shelter, Sandy DeGennaro for organizing and hosting the entire evening.

St. James Elementary School Bowl-A-Thon

Little Shelter would like to thank St. James Elementary School for their  wonderful fundraising effort.  The children from the school, in particular the Civics Group, put together a Bowl-A-Thon which raised $500 for Little Shelter.  Jodi Record visited the school on Thursday, March 15, to accept the check and talk to the children of the Civics Group.  Jodi was accompanied by her dog Charlie Brown, whom she adopted from Little Shelter.  They are pictured below with the students and teachers of the Civics Group.

West Virginia Dogs Happy to be at Little Shelter

We are happy to report that recently we were able to help out two shelters in rural West Virginia by taking some adult dogs and puppies. Unfortunately many shelters in these areas have very high euthanasia rates, with extremely adoptable and sweet dogs and puppies being put to death. Very often the means of euthanasia is by gas, not by lethal injection. Many wonderful volunteers were involved with transporting these beautiful dogs to us, meeting us in a train station in New Jersey where they were transported to our vehicles to be brought back to our shelter. A special thank you goes to all the people who helped transport as well as those who spent hours and hours of their times arranging it.  We will continue to focus our attention on the needs of Long Island animals, but hopefully will be able to reach out to these shelters to help those dogs/puppies in the future when space allows. Please remember, these animals that are dumped in municipal shelters have no one to speak for them. That is why we focus our attention on "pound rescues".

Little Shelter at Saks Fifth Avenue

On February 12, 2002 a benefit was held for Little Shelter at Saks Fifth Avenue NYC, in conjunction with the launch of Chesley McLaren's new book 'Zat Cat'. The function was attended by Maryann Chernovsky, Little Shelter President, together with staff members Jodi Record and Arleen Leone and recently adopted poochie Tootsie. Many thanks to Saks Fifth Avenue, especially Michael Macko, for putting together such a great night. Also thank you to Chesley McLaren and Scholastic Press for allowing us to partner in this event.
