Pet of the Month

Decisions, decisions. It is so difficult to choose just the right new furry family member. Your heart tells you to take them all, but your head says that you cannot. But, which one to choose?  While there are hundreds of dogs and cats available for adoption at Little Shelter, we would like to spotlight one or two each month to help you narrow your search and to give some attention to our overlooked residents. We hope as you look at the adorable little faces and read the biographies included in "The Cat's Meow" or "Diamond in the Ruff", you will find the new love of your life. As soon as one of these little guys is adopted, we will let you know.  In the meanwhile, happy looking!

Cat's Meow - Dewie
September,  2011
After years of giving love, poor Dewie was abandoned at a vets office.  Afraid and unsure, Dewie was understandably a little nervous when he arrived at Little Shelter.  We knew that with some TLC this handsome man would flourish, and with the first-rate care and love bestowed on him as only Little Shelter staff and volunteers can do, we were proven right.   The handsome fellow is a real people pleaser - all he wants to do is snuggle by your side.
We're not sure why Dewie's previous family abandoned him, but their loss could be YOUR gain.  Let Dewie be your leading man and adopt or foster him today!

Diamond in the Ruff - Starr
September,  2011
This beautiful young lady truly deserves her name as she IS a star!  Unfortunate beginnings left Starr and her babies abandoned in a city shelter, but now at Little Shelter, Starr is beginning to blossom.  She has shown that she is really just a pup at heart and is starting to embrace her youthful exuberance.  She is a favorite amongst some of the staff and volunteers who work with her daily and with the right guidance she is thriving.

Starr longs to be someone's leading lady.  Could it be you?  Come meet Starr and consider adopting or fostering this special girl!

Cat's Meow - Samson  ADOPTED
June,  2011
Samson is an ULTRA sweet orange tabby neutered male. His approximate DOB is 1/10/02.  He came to the Little Shelter on 1/10/11 after being all alone in the freezing cold. Samson is a mush and loves to show off his charm. This sweet boy loves to be pet especially when he gets his back stratched by anyone willing to do it. He loves his treats and at times likes belly rubs. This handsome young man is still playful but he's also really good at laying on the couch and just watching TV with you. Samson would like to find his forever home so he can dish out the lovin. Are you ready for all that Samson has to offer?

Cat's Meow - Figaro  ADOPTED
April,  2011
Figaro is a sweet, young spayed female. She has been waiting patiently for a loving family to call her own since April 2010.  Figaro's perfect match would be someone who can look past her initial shyness. Someone who will give her the time and space she needs to blossom into the loving companion she knows she really is.

Right now, Figaro has an empty day planner so she'd really like to start meeting new people and making some new friends.

If you'd like to meet Miss. Figaro, come down to the Little Shelter for a visit and bring a good feather toy to dangle in front of her. She loves those.

Diamond in the Ruff - Emilio
May,  2011
Imagine the difficulties a blind dog would encounter walking the Long Island streets as a stray, then imagine the fear and uncertainty that would creep into the very core of their being when they find themselves alone and abandoned in a cold, strange shelter.  Healthy animals with perfect vision find it hard enough to cope with life in a shelter, but when your only sense of what is going on around you is the barking from other kennels and the clanking of cage doors, you will do all you can within your power to defend yourself from the unknown....to survive!!!!  This is Emilio's story and these are the feelings he no doubt felt before being rescued by Little Shelter, and although he is now safe in our care, he is still far from feeling safe and secure in his sightless body.

Naturally, we want to do everything we can to help Emilio, and we had hoped we could improve his quality of life by taking steps to have his vision restored.  Unfortunately a visit to an eye specialist revealed that Emilio has no blood vessels in his eyes and was likely born blind, or became blind very quickly as a puppy - his vision cannot be restored!   At just 4-years-old, Emilio has a long life ahead of him, but it will be a life where he will never know the colors of the world around him, or the face of the person that feeds him.  With time, love and patience, however, we know that he will take comfort in the kind hand of the person that strokes his head, and be soothed by the soft voice that talks to him.

If you think that you could be that person, please stop by Little Shelter and meet Emilio.  He has so many life-lessons that he is waiting to teach that special someone!
