Sponsor an Animal

Little Shelter's mission is to find each dog, cat, puppy, and kitten a loving forever home where they will enjoy life to its fullest.  However, many of our residents come to us with medical or social conditions that prolong their stay here or make it impossible for them to be adopted.  We never turn our back on these little guys; rather, we strive to give them all the love in our hearts.  While we have an infinite amount of love to share, money is often in short supply.

Little Shelter asks those of you who cannot bring a pet into your homes at this time or pet guardians whose homes are already filled with dogs and cats to please consider sponsoring one of our long-term dogs and cats.  Sponsorship can be a one-time donation or a monthly one.  Either way, you will be helping Little Shelter provide for lovable companion animals who can really use your support.  Please scroll down, take a look at our sponsor pets, and read their stories.  You are sure to fall in love with at least one of them.

Whiskers - 3/7/09:

Poor Whiskers thought that he had found the perfect family, but unfortunately found himself once again in our care when he developed a terrible ear infection. That ear infection turned out to be so severe that that surgery was recommended to help Whiskers heal. Of course we were not going to let this handsome boy remain in such agony, and he received the surgery he so badly needed. With a lot of love and TLC, Whiskers is now on the road to recovery. Please show Whiskers how much you care and donate now to become his sponsor. We know how much he will truly appreciate your help!.

Felix - 3/7/09:

When we got the call from a city shelter asking us to help by taking in a 14 year old Shih Tzu, how could we not say yes? Apparently the little guy had been found wandering the streets of Brooklyn as a stray, and no owner had come forward to claim him. When he arrived at Little Shelter we discovered that Felix was actually closer to 17 years old and he was suffering with a severe upper respiratory infection. Several visits to the vet and a regimen of antibiotics later and this little senior citizen is now feeling much better. He may be missing his teeth, and be almost 100 in human years but Felix enjoys romping and frolicking with other dogs and his sprightly personality betrays his true age. It will take a special person to adopt this little man in his twilight years, but we know that person is out there. Until his lucky day arrives, please help us provide Felix with everything he needs to live happily and comfortably in his old age and donate now to become his sponsor.

Alvin- 10/28/08:

Alvin has been at Little Shelter far longer than any cat should be; in fact he has been in our care for 11 years. Alvin came to us after being abandoned along with his 2 brothers. Simon and Theodore were very outgoing and were quickly adopted into loving homes.  Unfortunately Alvin was very shy, making the perfect home for him difficult to find. Alvin had a difficult time adjusting to his abandonment and only recently has he begun to accept our love and affection - but only on his terms. Alvin has called Little Shelter home for so many years that he has decided this is where he is most comfortable spending the remainder of his life, and that is fine with us. He is lucky enough to have a harem of lovely ladies to snuggle up to each night who truly worship him. Please donate now to sponsor Alvin in his senior years and help us provide him with all that he needs to live his life in comfort and peace among his friends at Little Shelter.

Sam - 10/28/08:

Sam was on her way to the euthanasia room when spotted by our rescue manager at a city shelter.  When asking about the little girl we were told that she had several large tumors and every other rescue group had declined to save her.  They felt that they had no choice but to euthanize her.  Well they hadn't asked Little Shelter and there was no way we were going to let this little girl meet such an unfortunate end.  Sam was brought back to Little Shelter where she was diagnosed with late stage lymphoma.  She will need 6 -12 months of chemotherapy and undergo regular testing to monitor her progress, including blood work and x-rays.  Unfortunately after beginning chemo, Sam was stricken with pneumonia which delayed her treatments and set her back.  Although back on schedule with her treatment, it pains us to see this charismatic little girl endure so much.  At just 6 years old, most Chihuahua’s have many years ahead of them. Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly what lies ahead for Sam.  We will go to the ends of the earth to help this little girl survive and live a quality life, but we need your help! Although we will never deny her the life-saving treatment she needs, Sam’s chemotherapy is proving to be very expensive! Sam almost met a premature end in a cold, sterile, city shelter.  Donate now to become Sam’s sponsor and make her future a little bit brighter!

Prince Charming- 10/02/08:

Prince Charming lives up to his name – his handsome, debonair good looks, and refined manners are something to be admired. You would think a cat with such style and panache would be quickly adopted, but unfortunately this hasn’t been the case for Prince Charming. Prince Charming was found wandering around a local neighborhood looking for food. His slender frame had become emaciated and he would not have survived much longer on his own. We also noticed that Prince Charming was a little wobbly on his feet. What could be mistaken for a cute swagger is actually the result of a slight neurological problem that makes him a little unsteady when he walks. We are hoping that potential adopters will look past his unsteady gait to see the wonderful personality that lies beneath. We know that some day a special person will walk through the doors of Little Shelter and fall in love, but until that day comes, we will continue to take care of our royal resident, and give him everything that he needs. Please help us care for Prince Charming and donate now to become his sponsor. He sure would appreciate your help!

Pauly - 10/02/08:

Pauly arrived at Little Shelter several months ago, a scared, frightened young boy. He came to us from a high kill shelter in the south, along with his 6 brothers and sisters. It was immediately obvious that Pauly had not received much attention in his young life as he was afraid of most people he met. We knew it would take some work and a lot of TLC to get him to the point where he could trust humans, but it was a task that we were willing to take on. Our staff and volunteers have worked with him daily, and Pauly is slowly gaining confidence. He now loves to go for walks and snuggle with his favorite people, and is getting better with each passing day. We still have a way to go, but we will continue to work with Pauly until a patient, loving home can be found. Please help us provide for Pauly until that time comes, and donate now to become his sponsor. Show him that humans can be his friends!

Blondie - 09/08/08:

Blondie looked confused as her owners drove off with their belongings packed in their car. As days turned into weeks, she realized that they weren’t coming back and she was left to fend for herself. A kind neighbor kept an eye on Blondie and made sure that she had food and water, but then disaster struck – Blondie was hit by a car and had to have her leg amputated. Knowing that Blondie could no longer live outdoors, the neighbor brought Blondie to the safety of Little Shelter in the hopes that she would soon find a new home. Unfortunately since arriving, Blondie has been passed over for more physically perfect felines. While potential adopters see a three-legged cat, what they don’t see is the strength and determination that has helped Blondie overcome this ‘small’ obstacle in her life. Blondie now gets around like she never had a fourth leg in the first place. It may take a while, but we know that eventually someone will see this girl for the strong and courageous cat that she is, and give her the home she deserves. Until that time arrives we are happy to have the company of our three-legged friend. Please let Blondie know that in your eyes she is perfect, and donate now to become her sponsor. We know she will appreciate your vote of confidence!

Rickey - 09/08/08:

When Rickey first arrived at Little Shelter he had youth on his side. We thought that a young dog such as he would be quickly snapped up and go on to live in a loving home. Unfortunately, many months have passed, and Rickey’s dream of a home has not yet come true. Perhaps it’s his high energy level, perhaps he doesn’t have the right ‘look’, or perhaps it’s simply that he prefers a home without kids. Whatever the reason, we know that Rickey’s ideal home is out there somewhere, and we will never waiver in our search. Until our mission is complete, we will continue to provide Rickey with everything that a young, active pup needs. Please help us continue our search and donate now to become his sponsor. We know with your help we can make Rickey’s dream come true!

Mouth - 7/5/08:

It’s taken a long time for Mouth to earn his name. In fact, it’s taken years! Mouth came to Little Shelter 4 years ago as a kitten and never left. Most kittens are adopted quickly, but Mouth was initially uncomfortable with humans. We worked with him to gain his trust, but Mouth’s trust isn’t earned easily. He is only just now beginning to show affection toward his caretakers and will often strike up a conversation and roll over as they walk by. Unfortunately he is still shy when meeting new people and doesn’t always show that same affection for first time visitors to our cattery, people that may provide him with that ‘forever’ home that he needs. We will continue to work with Mouth and help him improve his social skills, but we may need to just accept him for the shy and lovable boy he is. You can help us care for Mouth by donating now to become his sponsor. With your help, he can have just a little bit more to talk about.

Darius - 7/5/08:

Darius has experienced more turmoil in his short life then many dogs experience in a lifetime. At just a few weeks old, both Darius and his sister suffered horrendous abuse at the hands of a human. Darius sustained the worst injuries with a broken jaw and brain damage. How anyone could do this to such a sweet baby, we’ll never know. His jaw healed well but Darius will always carry the scars of his ordeal. His head has a slight tilt and one eye shows the effects of his ordeal, but Darius is starting to blossom into a fine young man. While he is starting to learn his commands, and is very eager to please, we know it is going to take time to find that special someone for Darius. Until that time comes, we will happily shower Darius with the love and kindness he deserves, and show him that he is a very special part of our hearts. Please show him that you care and donate now to become his sponsor. Together we can set Darius on a path to a long, healthy and happy life.

Murray - 3/3/08:

With good looks such as these, one would think that Murray would have the confidence to match. Unfortunately that is not the case. Rather then strutting his stuff and commanding the attention of the other cats, as well as visitors to Little Shelter, Murray can sometimes be found hiding in a corner. He seems to be a little bit afraid of other animals and tries to make himself invisible. Unfortunately that’s a difficult task, as Little Shelter is home to more then 350 cats, and every where visitors turn, a furry feline is rubbing against them, eager for attention. We know that Murray would love to do the same, if only he can conquer his fear. Until that day comes, it will be difficult for potential adopters to notice our handsome guy, and therefore hard to find him a home.

Little Shelter will keep Murray with us for as long as it takes to build his confidence and find a loving home. We can sure use your help and Murray will benefit from your love. Please let Murray know that he doesn’t have to be afraid, and donate now to become his sponsor.

Mabel - 3/3/08:

Weighing in at little more than 3lbs, Mabel is experiencing some challenges. Found abandoned inside a box, this 12 year old cutie was a sight to see. Her fur was in quite a mess. Within minutes of arriving at Little Shelter, Mabel was scooped up and taken to our Medical Dept. where we gave her a bath and shaved off her long, matted hair in the hopes of making her more comfortable. A medical examination by our Veterinarian found that this little girl was riddled with arthritis, making her body painful to the touch. In addition, Mabel has dental issues that will require attention, and she is currently recovering from an Upper Respiratory Infection. Despite her slight discomfort, Mabel has bonded with many our staff members and she loves to be held and give little puppy kisses. We will ensure that Mabel receives the best medical attention available as we look towards finding her forever home, but we sure could use your help. Please help Mabel heal, and donate now to become her sponsor. She may be little in stature, but she is BIG in courage.

Finnegan - 11/30/07:

It has been three years since Finnegan’s human mom passed away, leaving her and nineteen feline siblings alone in their Brooklyn home. Luckily for this furry family, Little Shelter was able to step in, and bring them all to safety. Many of Finnegan’s younger brothers and sisters have been fortunate enough to find loving homes, however Finnegan is still anxiously awaiting her lucky day. A little on the scrawny side, and senior in years, Finnegan is quick to make herself known to visitors in our cattery. Always eager to rub her head against a friendly hand, Finnegan is definitely not the shy type.

We don’t know why a wonderful family has not adopted this black and white beauty. Perhaps it’s due to her age, but we like to believe that age is just a number, and Finnegan has many quality years ahead of her yet. We hope that one day someone will take a chance on this girl, but if that day should never come, we are happy to provide Finnegan with all that she needs. Let Finnegan know that you are thinking of her and donate now to become her sponsor. She’ll be thrilled to know you care.

Scooter - 11/30/07:

When you look at his face you see a handsome little guy with scruffy fur, but as your eyes travel down to his wagging tail, you notice that something is not quite right. With the exception of a few sparse hairs, Scooter is almost completely bald from midway down his back to the tip of his tail. Abandoned in a local town shelter, Scooter’s skin condition left him with little chance of being adopted, but one look into his soulful brown eyes and our Little Shelter staff knew that they couldn’t leave him behind. Whisked off to the safety of Little Shelter, Scooter is undergoing blood tests to determine the exact cause of his hair loss. There are several possibilities, all which may require lifelong medication. Whatever the outcome, we will be happy to provide Scooter with all that he needs to continue to lead a long and happy life. Medical care can be costly. Please help us provide for Scooter and donate now to become his sponsor. We would sure appreciate your help and we know Scooter will too. In fact, he’ll wag his bald tail a few more times just to say thank you!!!

Feta - 10/22/07:

Losing a loved one is incredibly hard. Losing a loved one and , this is the situation poor Feta found herself in when her owner recently passed away. Feta is having a hard time adjusting and is quite depressed. We hope that with time and a little love, Feta will come out of her depression. Whatever it takes, we will be there for this little girl. Please help us care for Feta while she is at Little Shelter and donate now to become her sponsor. We know with your help we can put a smile on her adorable face.

Granny - 10/22/07:

Imagine this – you’ve been a dutiful, loving companion your entire life. You’ve always been available for a loving kiss, good company, and unconditional love. Old age creeps up on you and you begin to suffer some of the ailments that go hand-in-hand with being a senior citizen. You lose your hearing, followed by your sight, and suddenly the world that you have always known has become a scary, unfamiliar place. You don’t know how you got there – perhaps you wandered off. Strange hands pick you up and put you in a cold steel cage. You feel the tension in the air. You know there are other dogs in this place as lonely and scared as you are, waiting for that familiar touch and smell of the person you love to come and take you home. The staff at that shelter thinks you should be euthanized, simply because you are too old. Your years of giving don’t seem to account for much…… Unfortunately this is the situation Granny found herself in BEFORE coming to Little Shelter. A Good Samaritan heard of her plight and knew that this little old lady deserved a much better ending. She contacted Little Shelter, and we of course agreed. The stress of shelter life was taking its toll on Granny. A medical checkup revealed that she had a severe heart murmur. We called on the help of one of our volunteers, and Granny is now living in a foster care home until a permanent home can be found. She will also need ongoing medical treatment for her heart murmur, which could prove to be quite costly. Whatever it takes, we will ensure that Granny will spend the remainder of her life in comfort, however long that may be. Please donate now to become Granny’s sponsor, and let her know that she is not alone.

Keisha - 8/28/07:

When you are a shy girl like Keisha, it is hard to stand out amongst the more than 300 cats currently Little Shelter home. While some cats immediately jump up and start parading around for attention, Keisha lies quietly in her bed, trying to work up the courage to do the same. Unfortunately it is all a little overwhelming for this little girl and her shyness leaves her constantly overlooked by potential adopters. We hope that one day Keisha will display that brave lioness we know lies beneath her meek exterior. Until that day we are happy to let her live peacefully at Little Shelter. Please help us provide for Keisha and donate now to become her sponsor. We know that your support will help to build her confidence.

Guiness - 8/28/07:

When Guinness’s owners turned to us for help, we couldn’t turn them away. They were in a desperate situation and didn’t know what to do. Guinness, their beloved 16 month old Pug had been attacked by the other dog in the household, leaving him with a severe eye injury and puncture wounds to his head. They knew that for his own safety, they would have to find Guinness a new home. Despite the trauma that he has been through, Guinness has maintained his loving personality. He is always eager to give gentle kisses and a tail wag to passers-by. It may be some time before Guinness will be available for adoption. We are monitoring his eye injury, hoping that it will heal. Unfortunately if it doesn’t heal, Guinness may have to have surgery to remove his eye. We will make sure that Guinness receives the best medical care possible, but all this comes at a cost. Please help Guinness recover and donate now to become his sponsor.

Nemesis - 8/03/07:

Nemesis is an oldie but a goodie.  This sweet senior had a loving home for 10 years, but she was brought to us recently due to an illness in the family.  Now, at eleven years of age, she is having trouble adjusting to life in a shelter.  While most cats like to curl up in their bed, Nemesis prefers to sleep underneath hers.  In fact, we had to move it to take this photo of her.  Sadly, because of her age, it may take Nemesis longer to find a new home. Sadder still, she may never have the fortune of being adopted. Whatever happens, we will be happy to provide Nemesis with a warm, secure place to sleep, and a full belly. You can help us provide for Nemesis by donating now to become her sponsor. We know that this little lady would really appreciate your help.

Kennedy - 8/03/07:

Kennedy is a sweet 10 month old, female, terrier mix that has been patiently waiting at Little Shelter for her forever home. One would think that with youth on her side, Kennedy would be snapped up by an eager family, but that has not been the case. Unfortunately, as a puppy, Kennedy did not receive any structure or discipline, and learned some bad habits. We are working with Kennedy and her manners are improving every day! We are happy to continue giving Kennedy the guidance that she needs, but we could sure use your help. Please donate now to become her sponsor and help us turn this lovable girl into a refined young lady.

Venice - 7/05/07:

Venice is just a bundle of love. She is a very affectionate girl that loves to talk to passers by. Visitors to Little Shelter will often hear a soft meow as Venice tries to capture their attention. Unfortunately Venice’s plea has not been heard, and one year after arriving at Little Shelter, she still awaits her special day – the day that someone falls in love with her and takes her home. We know that one day someone will understand what Venice is saying and whisk her away to the comfort of their home, but until that time we are happy to ensure Venice receives all that she needs. Please help us provide for Venice and donate now to become her sponsor. We know that the next meow that Venice lets out will be a meow saying ‘thank you’!

Chili & Bella - 7/05/07:

Chili & Bella are two Poodles that were surrendered to Little Shelter because their owner did not have time to care for them anymore. At nine and eleven years of age, these two sweeties fall into the ‘senior’ category. Not realizing that small dogs tend to live longer then their larger counterparts, adopters pass them over in favor of younger canines. When you add to this that Chili and Bella need to find a home together, adoptive homes are few and far between. We know that one day someone will see the love that this twosome has to offer and welcome them into their home. Until that time, we are happy to have their company. Please help us make their stay more comfortable and donate now to become their sponsor. We know that our little seniors will appreciate your help very much!

Tallulah - 4/17/07:

Tallulah's pretty name matches her personality.    Found living in a feral colony, Tallulah spent the first years of her life scavenging for food.  Most cats who live in feral colonies are afraid of humans, but not our Tallulah!  She immediately displayed her sweet and mushy side, and we knew right away that we had to bring this girl to safety.   Tallulah just loves belly rubs and back scratches, but she has yet to find that special family who will provide them every day.

Little Shelter will keep Tallulah with us for as long as it takes to find a loving home ö or for the rest of her life, if necessary.  But we can use your help and Tallulah can use your love. Please let Tallulah know that she will never have to scavenge for food again, and donate now to become her sponsor.

Potter - 4/17/07:

Potter hasn't been with us very long.  Actually, this little tyke is only 3 months old, but something traumatic happened to him in those few short weeks.  He came to us from a local municipal shelter because he is so shy and not a good candidate for immediate adoption.  One day, Potter will be a wonderful addition to the right family.  However, he first must be socialized so he can show potential adopters just how sweet and loving he is.

We are prepared to keep Potter with us for as long as it takes to prepare him for a forever home, but we could use your help to provide him with all he needs.  Please donate now and become Potter's sponsor for as long as he calls Little Shelter his home.

Leigh- 4/17/07:

Leigh is a cat who holds her age well.  You would never know by looking at her that this beautiful kitty is at least twelve years old.  The sad fact is that poor Leigh has been at Little Shelter since 1997!!  Constantly overlooked for adoption, Leigh has become a little grumpy and believes she is the queen of the cattery.  She also has her little quirks.  For instance, she refuses to drink from a water bowl; instead, she prefers to drink straight from the faucet.

Because of Leigh's diva ways, she may call Little Shelter home for the remainder of her life.  Of course, we are happy to have her company, but we could use your help.  Please donate now to become Leighâs sponsor and help us provide her with all that she needs.

Camden is a bit unusual, but we love him anyway.  When we rescued him many months ago from a municipal shelter in New York City, we noticed severe wounds in his mouth.  At first we were puzzled, but then we noticed how he loves to chomp on anything ö and we mean anything!  Large sticks and tree branches as well as rubber tires and plastic water bottles do not deter this little cutie; he just keeps chewing!  Needless to say, he requires a great deal of training and constant attention to keep him safe and healthy.  His manners are improving every day, but he still has a long way to go before we can safely place him in a forever home.

Everyone at Little Shelter is very kind and patient with Camden, and we will continue to be for as long as he needs us.  However, we could use some help with his care.  Please donate now and become Camdenâs sponsor.  We will appreciate the help and he will appreciate the extra love.

Apollo - 4/17/07:

Imagine living in a home for 10 years, and then one day finding yourself homeless and living in a shelter with hundreds of cats.   Unfortunately, that is the situation in which poor Apollo found himself when an illness in the family meant he "had to go".  Apollo is not adjusting well to life in a cattery. So, when visitors try to pay him a little attention, this handsome gray and white tabby will scurry to the nearest hiding place.

It may take Apollo some time to realize that the hands reaching out to him are hands offering love.  Until that time, we will continue to provide Apollo with all that he needs.  Please reach out to Apollo and donate now to become his sponsor.

Flip Flop - 4/5/07:

It has been almost one year since little Flip Flop arrived at Little Shelter with her two kittens.  As so often happens, her kittens were adopted quickly, but their mom has been waiting ever since.  The sadness in her eyes says she is wondering when her chance for a forever home will come.

Unfortunately, Flip Flop did not receive adequate socialization during her growing years. Therefore is having a little difficulty adjusting to humans.  Flip Flop just cowers in a corner or runs away if anyone tries to befriend her.  It may take years, or Flip Flop may never find the loving home she longs for.  Whatever happens, we will be sure to provide Flip Flop with a warm place to sleep, a full tummy, and tons of love for as long as she is with us, but we can use your support.  Please help us care for Flip Flop.  Donate now to become her sponsor.

Desi - 4/5/07:

Desi is our little old man.  Like most senior citizens, he can be perky and spry; but he can also be cranky and ornery.  His happy times reveal a toothless smile that just melts your heart. Sadly, his forever family abandoned Desi in a municipal shelter where death would have been a certainty.  We just could not turn our back on this once loyal companion.

Little Shelter is dedicated to providing the best possible life for Desi as long as he is with us.  Wonât you help us make his golden years bright and shining?  Please donate now and become Desiâs sponsor for as long as he lives at Little Shelter.

Button - 4/5/07:

Abandoned with one of her littermates, Button came to Little Shelter as a tiny kitten.  That was almost 6 years ago. Since then, our pretty girl has grown from a nervous kitty into a sweet but frightened adult.  Never letting her guard down, Button has never known the soft touch of a human hand.  Instead of rubbing against staff and volunteers for attention, she prefers to nestle in the shelves amidst warm towels and blankets.

While we would love to give her the hugs and kisses she deserves, we accept Button for who she is.   However, her personality may cause her to call Little Shelter 'home' for the remainder of her life.  While you may not be able to give Button soft tummy rubs, please show her the softness in your heart.  Donate now to become her sponsor.  Somehow, she will feel your love.

Frankie - 4/1/07:

Often found lazing around on freshly laundered towels, Frankie is a handsome orange and white cat.  Under his striking good looks lurks another side of Frankie: He has developed a reputation for being quite a grumpy old man.  We don't blame Frankie for being a little unsociable sometimes. After all, he has been waiting at Little Shelter for more than two years to find his forever home.

However long it takes, Little Shelter will be sure to provide Frankie with everything he needs to make his stay with us loving and comfortable.  Both Frankie and Little Shelter would really welcome your attention.   Please help us provide Frankie with his creature comforts by donating now and becoming his sponsor.

Harry - 4/1/07:

It is the same old, sad story.  A year ago, Harry was a frisky puppy.  He probably was friskier than most as Harry is a Jack Russell Terrier.  Many people want a Jack Russell, but most of them donât realize how active, high-strung, and intelligent these dogs are.  Such was the case with Harryâs adoptive parents.  So, the poor little guy was dumped in a municipal shelter for just being who he is.

Fortunately for Harry, Little Shelter came to rescue him.  However, our rambunctious fellow will more than likely be with us for a while as we search for a family who is ready to love him forever for who he is.  Harry would just adore that special attention that sponsors give our special pets ö and Little Shelter can certainly use your help while he is here with us.  Please donate now and become Harryâs sponsor; he will love you for it.
