Decisions, decisions.  It is so difficult to choose just the right new furry family member.  Your heart tells you to take them all, but your head says that you cannot.  But, which one to choose?  While there are hundreds of dogs and cats available for adoption at Little Shelter, we would like to spotlight one or two each week to help you narrow your search and to give some attention to our overlooked residents.  We hope as you look at the adorable little faces and read the biographies included in "The Cat's Meow" or "Diamond in the Ruff", you will find the new love of your life.  As soon as one of these little guys is adopted, we will let you know.  In the meanwhile, happy looking!

Mario

March 2, 2008

It’s hard to believe that a family could own a dog for 11 years, and then leave him in a kill shelter, simply because they are moving. Unfortunately this is a common occurrence, and exactly what happened to Mario. When we saw his skinny little body, and sad pleading eyes staring back at us from his small cage, we knew we couldn’t leave him there. Once back at Little Shelter, we uncovered a spunky little man with loads of personality. Always eager to strike up a conversation, Mario’s years betray his youthful personality. Mario has many years of love left to give his special person. Could you be that person? Please come and meet Mario and you just might find yourself falling in love

Handsome

March 2, 2008

Handsome is just as his name describes – he is truly a handsome fellow. It’s been several years since Handsome arrived at Little Shelter. He quickly assimilated into our large cat population, and became best friends with many of his feline room-mates. Because he loved having so much feline company, Handsome didn’t always show himself to potential adopters, perhaps thinking that he would miss having so many friends around if he was adopted into a home. Fortunately now, Handsome has also come to love the company of people and we feel that he is finally ready for his ‘forever’ home. Handsome would be best suited to a home with at least one other cat that he could call his new best friend. Please consider giving this good looking guy the forever home he so deserves, and come in to meet him today!

Simba

November 15, 2007

At a weight of 70lbs, it is hard to believe that Simba is still a mere pup and at six months of age, still has some growing left to do. Unfortunately most people coming to Little Shelter looking for a young dog are often looking for something a little on the smaller side, not a pup that is larger then most full-grown dogs. When we rescued Simba from a local town shelter, he was a high energy pup in a very big body. Lacking in manners, Simba probably received little or no training during his formulative puppy months. Despite his lack of decorum, we saw something special in Simba and we know you will too. Our staff and volunteers have been working with him daily and he is quickly learning his basic commands. Give him the home he so deserves and watch him grow into a big, beautiful, well-mannered gentleman.

Belle

November 15, 2007

Take a walk through Little Shelter’s cattery and chances are you will be accompanied by a little tabby cat sporting her trademark pink collar. She’ll sometimes run ahead of you, seemingly wanting to show you some of her favorite nooks and crannies, and then wait for you to catch up. If you look closely at this little girl, you will see she has a cloudy eye and a missing ear tip, but don’t let this fool you. Belle is not at all self-conscious about her battle scars, and is always eager to strike up a conversation.

With so much personality, we’re not sure why an eager adopter hasn’t snapped up Belle and given her a home to call her own. Could you be the one to change Belle’s luck? If you are considering adding a new feline to your family, then Belle could be your perfect match. Please stop by and meet this social butterfly. You never know, you just might find yourself falling in love!

Butchie

October 24, 2007

Poor Butchie hasn’t had the easiest life. This 8 year old Shepherd mix spent the last 2 years of his life living in a kennel, waiting patiently for his forever home. A couple of volunteers thought that Butchie deserved better, so they brought him to Little Shelter in the hopes that we could find this gentleman the kind of home he deserves. He is a quiet, laid-back guy that deserves to spend the rest of his life in a real home. Please consider giving Butchie that home! It will be a decision you won’t regret.

Taylor

October 24, 2007

It was one of those calls that we don’t like to receive. The lady on the other end of the phone said that she’d dumped her cat at a local shopping center in a crate…and then the phone went dead. Thinking quickly, Arleen hit *69 on her telephone and then dialed the number the lady had called from. It was a pay phone, but luckily someone picked up and told her the name of the shopping center, and that yes indeed, a cat in a carrier had been dumped there. Immediately one of our staff members drove to the location, and what they found inside the carrier was a beautiful male Persian. When Taylor was brought back to Little Shelter and given a medical checkup, we found that he was somewhat neglected. He was under-weight and his fur was a little matted. We also found that he had been declawed. With a little loving and some good nourishment, we know that Taylor will get back to his normal weight. Please consider giving a Taylor a home where he will be treated like a king. We know he’d make a great companion for that someone special..

Foster

August 28, 2007

Foster hasn’t had an easy life. At 10 years of age she found herself abandoned in a city shelter. It is difficult to imagine how frightened our little senior citizen must have been. Luckily for Foster, Little Shelter came to the rescue. When Foster first arrived at Little Shelter, we noticed a large mass on her abdomen. We rushed her to our vet who discovered that her mass was actually a hernia. Surgery corrected Foster’s hernia, but she still bears the deep emotional scars from living in pain and being abandoned. It is no wonder that Foster is wary of new people that she meets and takes a little time to warm up. But once she does, you have a friend for life. Foster would do best in a quiet household without other pets and small children. Please help Foster trust again and give her the home she so deserves!

Elizabeth

August 28, 2007

Our staff members still remember the day they rescued Elizabeth. Little Shelter received a call saying that Elizabeth’s owner had passed away and Elizabeth and her 19 brothers and sisters were living alone in an apartment. We knew we had to help and we were immediately on the road. Elizabeth was not an easy girl to catch. She had no idea what was happening – her mom was gone, and now some strangers were trying to put her into a carrier and take her away. After a few hours of gentle coaxing by our rescue team, Elizabeth and her brothers and sisters made it to the safety of Little Shelter. When Elizabeth first arrived, she resented being removed from the only home she had ever known. As time has gone by however, she has begun to realize that we are here to help her. Now she loves to get attention by rubbing against the legs of visitors. Please give this long-haired beauty a second chance at forever home. Visit Little Shelter today to meet her. You are sure to fall in love!

Buttercup

August 3, 2007

Buttercup is a survivor! This sweet, 4 year old Sharpei mix survived 5 months on the streets after Hurricane Katrina. Luckily for Buttercup, she eventually made it to the safety of Little Shelter. She is a shy girl that warms up with a few treats, and will bond strongly to her special person. Her favorite thing to do is lie down on her doggie bed and snuggle with her human caretakers. This brave girl survived a disaster, please give Buttercup a home and show her what it is to live in safety and comfort again

Anabelle & Victoria

August 3, 2007

Annabelle and Victoria haven’t had an easy start to their young lives. These two sweethearts were brought to a local vet with a painful infection in both eyes. Upon examination by the vet, it was decided that the most humane thing to do would be to remove their eyes. Now at 3 months old, Annabelle and Victoria are ready to find a new home. They are active, playful and loving girls that get around just fine without their sight. In fact, if you weren’t looking closely, you would never realize that they are blind. Because of everything that they have been through, Annabelle and Victoria must be placed in a home together. Please consider adding these sweet girls to your family. It will be a decision you won’t regret.

Walker

July 5, 2007

Walker is a handsome Sharpei mix that has been through so much in his life.   Walker was originally rescued from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina, along with his sister Mia.   Mia has been lucky enough to find her ‘forever’ home, and now Walker anxiously awaits his turn.  Five months of living in garbage and debris has left Walker with battle scars, but he wears them well.  He is a laid back fellow that likes nothing more then to lay by the feet of his person chewing on a bone.   Because of all that he has been through, Walker would do best in a home without other animals, and no small children.  Please open your heart and home to Walker and give him the chance he deserves!

Johnny

July 5, 2007

Johnny is a big, handsome black and white cat that was found wandering the streets, lonely and hungry.  Fortunately for Johnny, he was discovered by one of our staff members who brought him to the safety of Little Shelter.   Although he is one of the sweetest cats you could ever meet, six months after his arrival, Johnny is still awaiting his ‘forever’ home.   Please consider adding Johnny to your feline family.  It will be a decision you won’t regret!!!

Princess

April 17, 2007

Pretty doesn't even begin to describe this long-legged beauty.  With her crystal blue eyes and lovely markings, Princess, a three year old Hound mix, is stunning.  Not only does she have the looks, but she also has the brains.  This sweet girl knows all her commands, is housebroken, and has perfect indoor manners.  She has also recently taken up a new hobby of "weight pulling".  Princess has so much to offer that she prefers to be the only pet in the home.  The ideal home for Princess is one with a fenced yard and someone that will continue with her obedience work.

Princess would really love a happy ending and a "castle" to call her own.  Please make Princess feel like royalty and open your heart and home to her.

Cat's Meow

Mushy

April 17, 2007

Mushy's name says it all!  This de-clawed, talkative black cat is just a bundle of love.  Unfortunately, visitors to Little Shelter donât stop long enough to get to know Mushy for the Îmushâ that he is.  When they hear that he is a little on the Îolderâ side and see that he is missing an eye, potential adopters continue on to admire younger and prettier felines.   Mushy deserves to spend his golden years in a home with a family to call his own.  Please consider adding Mushy to your feline family.  It will be a decision you won't regret!

PET OF THE WEEK

Maisy

April 5, 2007

Maisy is a four year old, female, spayed Pointer mix.  This gorgeous girl has been at the shelter far longer than we thought she would be.  Outgoing and social, Maisy prefers to be the only pet in the home, but she does like play dates with most other dogs.  She is very active and needs a fenced yard and lots of playtime.  Maisy is completely housebroken, well mannered indoors and can be left for a full workday. She is also very intelligent.  Our little lady would do wonderfully with a family who would keep her mind stimulated with continued obedience training.

CAT OF THE WEEK

Nemesis

April 5, 2007

Nemesis is an oldie but a goodie.  This sweet senior had a loving home for 10 years, but she was brought to us recently due to an illness in the family.  Now, at eleven years of age, she is having trouble adjusting to life in a shelter.  While most cats like to curl up in their bed, Nemesis prefers to sleep underneath hers.  In fact, we had to move it to take this photo of her. Nemesis longs to spend the rest of her days in a new forever home, and she will provide her family with happiness and love for many years to come.

WILLOW

If you're looking for a cat with spirit, then look no further than Willow.  This feisty little lady is now in her fifth year of residence at Little Shelter.  Brimming with personality, Willow is an affectionate kitty who likes to show her love by grooming her humans.

With so much to offer, we're not quite sure why Willow is continuously overlooked by potential adopters.

Please make Willow's dream come true and give her the forever home she so deserves!
